Quick Fact: Two Home Run Games by 21 Year Olds

September 6, 2011

Rookie (and Top 5 prospect) Jesus Montero hit a pair of home runs yesterday in an 11-10 ugly victory for the Yankees over the Orioles. Montero was playing in only his fourth career game. He is just 21 years old.

Thanks to Aaron Gleeman of NBC’s Hardball Talk Blog (via River Ave. Blues – a personal favorite and the best Yankee blog I’ve found to date), it turns out Montero’s day was like none we have seen in the Majors in 18 years. Manny Ramirez was the last to do so when he hit a pair of home runs as a 21 year old in 1993.

Also, thanks to Sportscenter, Montero is just the third player in Yankee history to have a two home run game before turning 22. The others – Joe Pepitone, Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio.
