50 Best Players Not in the Hall of Fame
Graham Womack of Baseball Past and Present recently undertook a great project which I was able to contribute to. He came up with a list of about 300 players who are not in Baseball’s Hall of Fame, created a ballot of that list, and invited numerous SABR members, BBA members, and other contacts of his to vote on the 50 best players not in the Hall of Fame. In total he was able to receive 63 total ballots to consider and the results were certainly interesting. I won’t republish his entire Top 50 as I’d rather you took a look at his entire post considering all of the hard work he put unto this so go and check it out.
If we were to use the BBWAA’s cutoff for enshrinement – the player needs to be named on 75% of the ballots – then we’d see a total of nine names entering Cooperstown: Bert Blyleven, Roberto Alomar, Ron Santo, Alan Trammell, Jeff Bagwell, Shoeless Joe Jackson, Tim Raines, Barry Larkin, and Edgar Martinez. Pete Rose (who I did vote for) would have missed the cut by just one vote – which is remarkably telling considering the massive split opinion amongst fans on whether he deserves to be there or not.
